⚔ Name: Cu Chulainn | Lancer

⚔ Series: Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works
⚔ Canon point: Post his death/forced suicide

⚔ Personality: One of Lancer’s first noticeable character traits is his battle lust, he enjoys the thrill of fighting a worthy opponent which is a trait that is carried over from his Gaelic hero persona, Cu Chulainn. Cu Chulainn was well know for his many successes in battle and the near berserker rages that he flew into while he was on the field. Therefore Lancer is infinitely disappointed by his lot in the 5th Holy Grail War since Kotomine uses him primarily to collect data and to spy on the other Masters and Servants.
His ability to collect data actually proves that he is a reasonably intelligent person though he would much rather those around him feel and assume otherwise. He seems to know a great deal about the 5th Holy Grail War, even certain things that Tohsaka Rin, a skilled and highly knowledgeable mage, did not…like the secret of Assassin and why he couldn’t leave the Ryuudouji Temple. He also knew two out of the four locations where the Holy Grail could be summoned.
When he’s not fighting Lancer is actually a very amiable and playful individual and his mythological counterpart was known for his compassion and his likeability. He has an affinity for teasing people, especially when he feels as though he has some insight that those around him do not. He makes badgering remarks concerning Emiya and Tohsaka’s relationship before the two of them have the chance to openly admit that they are starting to like one another. His playfulness makes him appear as though he is not all that informed, when, to Tohsaka’s surprise, this is quite the opposite. He even has the guts to troll on Saber so hard that she loses her precious composure and snaps. It’s clear that unless he is battling Lancer tends to take very little seriously, even making light of serious situations including his death. Instead of focusing on the seriousness of the situation, his last words to Tohsaka were “come back when you’re older.” This gives the impression to those around him that he’s nothing more than a pain in the ass, but in reality he prefers to enjoy life.
He’s also very straightforward and honest, not one to simply let the elephant sit in the room; he’ll say the things that need to be said and has been described as blunt by Emiya. He tends to be as forthcoming as he possibly can be as well which is why Emiya learns to trust him when Saber is still wary of him. Emiya comments that he’s not the kind of person who would do things in a roundabout way, that he would rather face people head on as opposed to tricking them. This is true and one of the reasons Lancer cannot stand his Master’s cowardly methods.
Lancer seems to have a deepest loathing for betrayal, regardless of who is being betrayed. Even though Lancer disliked his own Master he didn’t betray him, suggesting that as a Servant he has pride—which really pissed him off when Archer said he should feed his pride to the dogs. By the way he refers to his job it is very clear that Lancer dislikes Kotomine saying that it is rare for him to enjoy what he does and that his orders are “disgusting.” He also refers to his master in a number of colorful ways in FSN and in the manga. He still follows his Master’s orders. This and the fact that he grows to like Tohsaka are some of the reasons he is repulsed by Archer when he sides with Caster.
When it comes to being confident in his ability Lancer seems to have it in spades, enough so that the possibility of having to face both Saber and Archer doesn’t seem to bother him one bit especially since he spent most of his time during the war holding back. He is also confident enough prior to his battle with Archer to say that he would go easy on him because he needed Archer to crawl back to Tohsaka and beg for forgiveness for betraying her. Lancer is never properly defeated in this route making his ability and skill more than just a boast.
He also has a sense of fair play and chivalry, though as a Servant he has no problem fighting any female Servant or Master as long as they have skill, he will acknowledge anyone with ability. He does, however, take issue with killing people who haven’t the means to fight back such as when Tohsaka was tied down to the chair. Of course when he killed Emiya it was to keep the secret of the Holy Grail War, but he did not prolong his death like certain Servants would, preferring to keep it as quick and relatively painless as possible. The second time he had to kill Emiya he saw skill and gave him the opportunity to fight back.
⚔ Age: 24 physically, thousands of years chronologically
⚔ Gender: Male
⚔ Appearance: Lancer is relatively tall, standing at 6’0” precisely and from his head down to his feet he is pure, lean muscle. Given his Lancer class he is designed to be more aerodynamic and less bulky than if he had been ascribed the berserker class. Though his past hero self was never described as being particularly bulky either so…He has several noticeable physical features, one being his gleaming red murder-eyes, the other being his long blue hair which he keeps tied back. Upon coming to Ariel he will have a scar on his chest in the position of his heart because of his…suicide, it left him with a gaping hole and he’ll be glad that the gaping hole didn’t follow him to Ariel, yes he will. By default Lancer wears his armor; it’s the same shade of blue as his hair…all the blue…all of the blue! There are protective runes on his armor; the toes of his armor are made from some form of protective metal as are the armored shoulder plates. As an aside note, when and if Lancer gets his power back he can summon this armor and dismiss it at will, instant nudity is Fate canon. Other clothing he can be seen wearing in the Fate series consist of leather pants or slacks, a white t-shirt (or depending on who he’s talking to he might dress it up a bit)…his wardrobe also includes the loudest, greenest, most horrendous looking luau shirt in the history of ever. Burn on sight.
⚔ Abilities/Powers: Oh wow, where to begin, he’s a Servant with a massive amount of skills and while he was summoned as a Lancer class Servant he had enough skill in his life as Cu Chulainn to be summoned as a Berserker, Caster, Rider, or Saber. Cu Chulainn from legend often went berserk in battle, he had a chariot and horses, he could use runes to great effect, and he also had famous swords…but it was the spear Gae Bolg, his most infamous weapon, that earned him Lancer status (the unluckiest class of them all). So let’s start with his Gae Bolg Skills and what they can do…
Gae Bolg is Lancer’s Noble Phantasm a red streamlined spear that, when he does get his momentum back he will be able to summon it and dismiss it at will. It’s connected to his soul much like an arm is connected to the body. It’s attacks include:
Barbed Spear that Pierces with Death: It is a sure-kill attack that will always pierce the heart (unless the victim in question has an insane amount of luck) because this attack reverses the nature of cause and effect or more aptly described as “because the lance is thrust, the opponents heart will be pierced” thrusting the lance as an act is just a “formality,” since the opponents fate was determined the moment the attack began. It’s crazy mind blowing stuff.
Also, when thrusting his lance it can move at some pretty weird angles to prevent the attack from being blocked so that the intended target can be struck.
When hit by this attack, if the victim survives, they will be cursed by a wound that will not heal. He can stick an enemy with his spear without the intent of killing them and deliver a wound that would plague his opponent until they died, he died, or Gae Bolg would have to be destroyed…not an easy thing to do. His opponents could heal themselves on the outside, but on the inside they would still be effected by his attack.
Soaring Spear that Strikes with Death: This is the true purpose of Gae Bolg, and this attack requires Lancer to jump back several meters, launch himself into the air, and lob his spear at his opponent at incredible speed (Mach two). It’s not a sure-kill attack, but there’s a lot more power that goes into it and it’s an attack that covers more area because Gae Bolg splits into multiple spears making this attack difficult to defend against unless the opponent has the right tools.
Now that we have an idea of what Gae Bolg can do, it’s Rune time. Lancer can use Runes in spite of being a Lancer and he has been shown using them to various effects, such as protection, he can create arenas for one-on-one battle where the opponents can’t escape and no one can interfere, he can raise his power by combining his Runes with Gae Bolg, he is able to use runes to start a fire. There are a number of different Runes that he can use in different ways, unfortunately not all of them are named as beautifully or described as accurately as his Gae Bolg attacks given that he is a Lancer. He is able to defend against certain degrees of magic and he can see through certain of Caster’s spells.
In Combat and as a Servant Lancer has another range of abilities…as a Servant he can go ghost and walk through walls, this Spirit form conserves energy. In combat he is supernaturally faster, stronger, more agile, blessed with more endurance than the average human. Given that he is a demi-god his heroic legendary self was dangerous, as a Servant he’s even more dangerous to cross for a normal human. He possess the skill Disengage which enables him to easily withdraw from combat even though he would never use it if given the choice, unless the battle is an unwise one, because Cu Chulaiin was intelligent in the art of war and battle. Being a lover of battle does not make him a foolish warrior.
As a Lancer his speed is superior to most of the other Servants, he is the fastest Servant at a dash, but in long distance Rider is even swifter, and his agility is described as being “beast-like.” He's a beast...heh.
He also has Protection from Arrows, making arrows or any kind of weapon that can be shot at him virtually useless if they catch his eye. Archer tried to shoot him at a distance and because he could see it, even at a great distance, the attack failed. If it is within his range of sight enabling him to see the murderous intent even from a vast distance, he can defend against it.
Finally Lancer has badass Battle Continuation, which means that even on the verge of death he is still a vicious fighter. He can cling to life even with a pierced heart or being without a Master, which would cause most of the other servants to simply fade away including Saber.
⚔
Personal Items: Nothing except for his armor and earrings. He will not have the armor imbued with runic magic and Gae Bolg won’t be present until he’s gained the ability to summon it from its little pocket place in the universe, wherever that may be.
